Craft Head Brewing: Shenzhen’s Hidden Gem for Craft Beer/Cider and Outdoor Dining

You don’t have to go to Shekou for a great Western experience. In the vibrant Xinzhou area of Futian District, Craft Head Brewing has become a beloved fixture in Shenzhen’s craft beer scene. This charming establishment, founded by New Zealander Nicholas Clark, offers a blend of cozy ambiance and exceptional drinks that have made it one of the city’s most cherished hangouts.

Craft Head’s first started in a small alley, but it has since leveled up into a spacious two-story venue at the intersection of Xinzhou Er Jie and Xinzhou Qi Jie (Xinzhou 2nd and 7th Street). The relocation has allowed the brewery to expand its offerings and create a more inviting atmosphere for Shenzhen patrons. One of the most striking features of the new location is its generous outdoor seating area, spread across two levels, providing the perfect setting for enjoying people watching as locals go about their business in Xinzhou. Plus, with the hot summer month, a craft beer or cider is an excellent way to wind down after a busy day.

While Craft Head is mostly known for its selection of craft beers, it’s the impressive selection of ciders that truly sets it apart for those who may not be beer enthusiasts. The brewery typically offers a rotating selection of about a dozen beers and ciders, many produced by Kia Kaha Brewing, which shares ownership with Craft Head. This diverse range ensures that there’s something to satisfy every palate, making it a go-to spot for both beer and cider lovers alike. There’s even a gin and tonic on tap!

Crafthead’s food menu is also impressive. My favorite appetizer at Craft Head is their Goat Cheese Wontons served with a Thai-style sweet and spicy sauce. A crowd favorite is their vegetarian “Chicken Nuggets.” These plant-based nuggets mimic the texture and flavor of traditional chicken nuggets so convincingly that even meat-eaters find themselves surprised! For those craving something more substantial, Craft Head’s ribs and burgers are a must-try.

It’s easy to see why Craft Head has become a favorite among locals and expats. The brewery’s evolution from a tiny pub to a spacious, multi-level establishment mirrors Shenzhen’s own rapid growth and transformation. Yet, despite its expansion, Craft Head has managed to maintain the warm, community-focused atmosphere that has been its hallmark since its inception. Their trivia nights, open mics, and constantly rotating selections make it an excellent choice for a date night or just a night out in general.
